Il Viso Adorno is the most distinctive festival in Torino di Sangro and commemorates the legend of the miraculous transfer of the Holy House of Mary from Nazareth to Loreto, which, according to tradition, took place on the night of December 9–10, 1294.
On the afternoon of December 9, devotees and townspeople, armed with torches, set out from Borgata Marina and walk about 8 kilometers along the ancient Tratturo Magno to reach the town center around midnight.
At dawn on December 10, a local resident intones the verses of the “Viso Adorno,” an ancient hymn in honor of the Virgin Mary, followed by the Pastorale, which is listened to in solemn silence. The musicians then make their way through the town, offering “good morning” greetings to officials and residents, in a tradition that dates back to ancient times.
