Flavors of the earth: oil, bread, wine

It all begins with a scent: the aroma of freshly baked bread at Antico Forno Cimini at 9:30 in the morning, when the chocolate bocconotti are still warm and the wood-fired oven radiates that old-fashioned warmth that fills the street. From here, a half-day tour begins, taking you through the hands of those who produce authentic food in Torino di Sangro.

The tour includes four stops: the historic bakery, Cantine Mucci for a tasting of Trebbiano and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, Cantina Effendi—a brewery-restaurant with a wide selection of craft beers (over sixty labels from Belgium, Germany, Ireland, and Abruzzo)—and we’ll wrap up with lunch at Agriturismo La Costa dei Trabocchi, featuring rustic cuisine with a view of the sea.

What sets this tour apart is its participatory nature: it’s not a quick-and-dirty tasting, but a chat with the producer, a tour of the barrels, and a family story. The vibe is that of the “slow food” movement—for those who want to understand where things come from, not just taste them. Best times to visit: September–October for the grape harvest, October–November for truffles and mushrooms.

Suitable for couples, groups of friends, anyone who loves wine and well-prepared food. Four hours by car between stops (distances are short but spread out). Practical tip: book Cantine Mucci and the Agriturismo at least 24 hours in advance, designate a designated driver, and buy a bottle of local extra virgin olive oil to take home the flavor of the tour.

Good to know

  • Book Cantine Mucci and the Agriturismo: the tasting is an experience, not a drive-thru
  • Designated driver: after the wineries, someone has to stay sober
  • Buy: a bottle of local extra virgin olive oil at the bakery, a bottle of Trebbiano at the winery, and a craft beer at Cantina Effendi
  • Best time for wine: post-harvest (October–November)—drink the newly made vintage
  • In spring and fall, agritourism spots serve more seasonal dishes (asparagus, mushrooms, Abruzzo white truffles)

Best time to visit: All year round. Harvest at the winery: September–October. Autumn produce: October–December

How to get there: by car (4 stops)
