The Bull and the Mouth of the River: History and Trivia

Legend has it that the inhabitants of ancient Civita di Sangro, fleeing from the Saracens, were led by a bull to the place where they decided to found their new settlement. Tradition holds that the animal stopped at the spot where Torino di Sangro stands today.

The town is situated on a ridge that stretches between the Osento River and the Ripari and Frainile streams. Another interesting fact is that, initially known as Torino, the town adopted its current name in 1862 to avoid confusion with the much more famous city in Piedmont.

The Mouth of the Sangro River and the Surrounding Area

Toward the coast, one of the places of interest to visit is the mouth of the Sangro River, the second-longest river in Abruzzo after the Pescara. You can cross one of the bridges of the former railway line, admiring the surrounding landscape, until you reach the beach of Lido Le Morge, which features a designated area for naturists.

A short distance away lies the Lecceta, a well-preserved example of the region’s native forest. Another must-see site, located in the upper part, is the British Cemetery, dedicated to the British soldiers who fell during World War II.

This area offers a perfect blend of history, nature, and tranquility, ideal for those seeking a bit of peace in contact with the landscape and the historical legacy of the region.
